Schadenfreude

I couldn't help but smirk over the demise of two prominent US evangelicals this week. Ted Haggard, who claimed to be some sort of spiritual advisor to George W Bush, has been fired after allegations of methamphetamine fuelled gay sex with a male fitness instructor. Even amongst the worst of the American religious right, Haggard has stuck out as unusually prejudiced and ignorant. He believes that gay people will burn in hell for all eternity. However...

"I am a deceiver and a liar. There’s a part of my life that is so repulsive and dark that I have been warring against it for all of my adult life”

A deceiver and a liar - yes, a professional one. Bush, with elections looming, has moved quickly to distance himself. An aide said of Haggard's name, "...this isn't a name the president would instinctively know."

One is reminded of the words of Jesus himself.

Matthew 7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

Here he is getting his come-uppance from Richard Dawkins. I thought that he took Dawkins remark about the Nurenberg rather well until it occurred to me that he clearly hadn't heard of Nurenberg and didn't understand what Dawkins meant.

Meanwhile another professional liar, Dr Kent Hovind, is looking at a 288 year jail sentence for tax fraud on a gigantic scale. Dr Hovind was a prominent "Creation Scientist" and proprietor of the preposterous religious theme park, Dinosaur Adventure Land.

Yes, fair point. Actually I have been eating out rather a lot but I keep going back to the same places which is a bit boring to write about - so I've been indulging my other hobby horse here.

I'll definitely try and go somewhere new shortly.
