Scruffy's
When does a pub become a restaurant? Or vice versa?
Scruffy's looks like a pub. It smells like a pub; fag-ash and beer-fumes being the predominant odours that greet you as you cross the threshold from Derby Road. Oh let's face it, it is a pub. There is nothing wrong with pubs of course, in fact I am a big fan of them. And some pubs serve excellent food and not all of them smell of fag-ash.
But Scruffy's is aptly named and as a restaurant it's a decidedly informal student dive. Twenty years ago I'm sure I would have loved it, but not any more. It's cheap and cheerful - our (student?) waitress could not have been more charming after our vegetarian diner detected meat in her vegetarian stuffed potato skins - "I'm sooo sorry, the chef is half asleep!" They removed it from the bill without question.
But it's basic pub food all the same.

I don't think you should be so quick to judge it from that visit. The Scruffy's in the Lace Market is lovely. They serve good food and it has lovely decor and charming staff. It has character!
It's not that cheap really because the food you're getting is cheap quality. When we visited you could smell the toilets when in restaurant and they tried to cover the smell with plug-in air freshners!!! nice!!
