The Larder on Goosegate
The dreadful Aquarium has gone and in its place you will find the new and refreshingly unpretentious Larder on Goosegate. The emphasis here seems to be on quality, locally sourced ingredients rather than fancy presentation or passing trends. The menu offers simple, down-to-earth British classics so traditional as to be almost a novelty (if you see what I mean).
River Exe Mussels in white wine cream - it doesn't come much more traditional than that, nor I think much better. Great big, juicy mussels and a delicious sauce which I simply had to drink from the bowl.
The 28-day hung sirloin steak was superb and raises the question, why aren't all steaks hung for 28 days? I can understand why the supermarkets don't sell them like that, the consumer has a preference for lurid, red chunks of meat. In Sainsbury's Jamie Oliver branded matured steaks come in a translucent pack to disguise their brown colouring. But the depth of flavour is incomparable.
The larder also make excellent fat chips, timed to perfection. I'll be going back here no doubt.
Don't forget to vote in the Nottingham Restaurant Awards before the end of the month.
